Participants will learn about some of the communication disorders that can happen post-stroke and how to apply principles of Communication Support in keeping with the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations. This workshop will be held IN PERSON at the Tony Graham Recreation Centre, 100 Charlie Rogers Pl, Kanata (Ottawa) This is a free event for healthcare providers working in stroke care in the Champlain Region.

Guided by presentations from Joanne Winckel, SLP with the Aphasia Centre of Ottawa, and Karen Mallet, SLP, Best Practice Team for CRSN, the workshop will feature a morning session focused on theory, followed by a hands-on practical component in the afternoon. Volunteers with aphasia from the Aphasia Centre of Ottawa will be joining us to support your learning and help build your confidence in applying these skills. They are truly exceptional educators, and we’re grateful for their involvement! We have room for 40 participants.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss post-stroke communication disorders
  • Describe the impact of language barriers on communication and interaction
  • Apply basic principles of communication support for people with aphasia
  • Use a pictographic resource
